Let's Cook Lemko Dishes
The area covered by the project was occupied mostly by Lemko until the World War II. In 1948 mass deportations were conducted on the Polish side of the border as the result of political decision. Hence there was a significant cultural impoverishment that has continued up to this day, and yet diversity , including cultural diversity, is crucial for local development where new initiatives are incubated at the meeting point of various cultures and traditions. The main problems of the described area is high unemployment coupled with a small amount of jobs outside agriculture. In connection with the above-average attractiveness, the development of tourism and job creation in the services sector create a natural opportunity for growth. The use of Lemko regional cuisine in tourism and its use as a tourist draw may be of high importance, especially that in the previous publications the problem was either ignored or treated marginally . It will make one identify a particular dish with a particular place. The customs present in a particular area may be also shown through traditional dishes of the region so the tourist can get information about the culture of different places. The project involves presentation of tourist offer of the border region in terms of the use of regional cuisine using the example of restaurants, hotels and agritourist farms. The cultural and touristic valueas of the region will be promoted through the main activities such as creating a traditional Lemko cookbook including its online version, and organizing of food-tasting and feasts. The long-term impact is based on creating positive associations for tourists and the desire to return to the attractive region . This idea is consistent with the conclusions of the International Scientific Conference on "Eating as a regional tourist product" that took place in 2008.
The main objective of the project is to strengthen and intensify cross-border cooperation of Polish citizens and Slovakia through the implementation of grassroot initiatives for the promotion of common cultural values. The direct objective is to create and promote joint tourism product based on the cultural values of the Lemko people living on both sides of the border. This product will include the creation of a bilingual culinary guide of Lemko region on paper and in multimedia version, on an interactive website. Product promotion will include a series of promotional events on the Polish and Slovakian border. The aim is to interest the population of the border area , and tourists staying for mutual understanding their cultural heritage and establish cross-border contacts and strengthening border tourism brand . Aim of the project will include increasing the attractiveness of the tourist project area through promotion of existing tourist assets (traditional Lemko culture ) and stimulate the creation of new tourist attractions on regional cookery .
